Introducing the 1st Annual

The 1st annual Michiana Dance Marathon!

The mission of Michiana Dance Marathon is to create a unique, student-led fundraising event that brings our community together for a specific purpose -- to help break the cycle of homelessness. Proceeds from the MDM will benefit the Center for the Homeless, a nationally-recognized residential facility for 200 men, women, and children who participate in continuum of care programming offered in conjunction with various on-site partner agencies.

Each guest of the CFH works with an individual coach to engineer a self-sufficiency plan. Services supported by the funds Michiana Dance Marathon raises include GED classes, peer mentoring, group therapy, budgeting courses, job readiness seminars, and early childhood intervention.

Spearheaded by a committee of students at Indiana University South Bend, the people behind Michiana Dance Marathon aim to make this an annual event that will build in momentum and form long-lasting and beneficial partnerships between academic institutions in the area, the CFH, and the community.

Together, we can break the cycle of homelessness, one step at a time.

Where Indiana University South Bend
When Saturday, April 19 - 20, 2008 : Noon - Noon (24 hours)

To encourage participants to stay the entire 24 hours, activities are planned throughout the marathon to ensure there will never be a dull moment. For example:

  • • WAOR, The Bear, B100, and Power 95.7 will all broadcast their radio shows from the marathon for the entire 24 hours.
  • • Participants will be entertained by live performances, games, bands, food and beverages and loads of other surprises.
  • • The marathon will also have a signature line dance. Over the 24 hours, participants will learn the line dance, which will provide a needed source of energy for students while dancing throughout the night.
  • • Finally, the marathon will conduct a “family hour” near the end of the event. Here, staff and guests of the Center for the Homeless will share their experiences – a personal and powerful end to an event designed to help break the cycle of homelessness.

As a dancer, there is no sleeping! However, dancers do have 13 meals throughout the 24 hours to relax, rest and recharge.

MDM is a year-long event. It takes a great deal of preparation and planning. All committee members have an active role in getting the marathon off the ground and making the event successful. Volunteers are needed for many of our marathon committees.

The event will be loaded with fun, entertainment and volunteers from around Michiana! So do your part to help the Center for the Homeless by registering to participate or joining a committee!
